How to Take a Flat Lay Image for Instagram

Want to take a photo of your custom swag to share on social media? Follow these 4 easy steps:

1. Find a solid surface

Any non-cluttered surface like the floor, table, blanket, grass, etc works. You just want something plain to not distract from the products.

2. Find good light

You can use an area right by the window, or a shaded area. Just make sure there's no direct sunlight shining on your subject. On the flip side, make sure it's not too dark either!

Sadie and Lucky (the patch of black fur) are our official company mascots by the way!

3. Place your products strategically

Items look great in threes. You can place them angled, or line them up. If you have straight edges, it might look better lined up like this:

4. Edit your image

I took this image on my smartphone and edited in VSCO cam, but you can easily edit your image directly on Instagram. Here are the adjustments I usually make: (make sure your phone is on full brightness, so you can accurately edit)

Brightness +20-50

Contrast +15-20

Warmth +10-20

Fade +10

Highlights -10

Shadows +20-30

Sharpen +0-10

I go more or less as needed, but this is my general edit when posting phone photos. I hope these tips helped you learn how to take good flat lay images for your products.
